PEACH-FACED LOVEBIRDS
Agapornis Roseicollis

This parrot species comes from family “Psittacidae”, and genus ''Agapornis'', together with Ficher's lovebird (A. Ficheri), Black-winged lovebird (A. Taranta), Lilian's lovebird (A. Lilianae), Grey-headed lovebird (A. Cana) and Black-cheeked lovebird (A. Nigrigenis).

Peach-faced lovebird is native to southwest Africa, mostly Namibia and Botswana , and in southwest Angola ( these lovebirds have more blue color than those in Africa ). Generally speaking, peach-faced lovebirds are short and blunt-tailed parrots. They can grow up to 15cm. Peach-faced lovebird have lively green plumage on their back, yellow-greenish chests. The forehead to behind the eyes, cheeks throat and upper breast are rose to pink, being reddest on the head. The tail is short and blunt, colored in bright blue, with red spots on every tail feather. Legs are short but very strong, and the beak is bright and rather large and powerful for their overall size. Peach-headed lovebirds inhabit dry areas, but usually near bodies of water. The water is essential for bringing up the youngsters. They nest in hollows of rotten trees or chumps. They live in flocks, around a dozen of them in one flock, but it is common for them to make larger flock. Once they bond, they don't separate untill they die. This also stands for Ficher's lovebirds and Masked lovebirds, too. That's why they are called the ‘lovebirds'. They eat seedish food, but they don not have anything against fruit and vegetables, and believe it or not they are very fond of worms and insects. Mating period is between march and may. In this period both male and female tear up peaces of branches up to 10 cm long, and they do it in very specific way. After tearing up, they stick them into the feathers on their back and above tail. This way lovebirds are transporting building material for nest, which have sferic shape after it's done. Peach-faced lovebird hatch 4 to 6 white eggs, sized 24 x 17 mm. The incubation lasts 21 to 23 days. The chicken stay in nest 5 to 6 weeks, which is enough time for them to fledge. Two weeks after fledging youngsters leave the nest and form new couples. When eight moths old peach-faced lovebirds become sexually mature.

This lively, stocky parrot is very popular as a pet parrot, so it's no wonder this species have special and important place at breeder's voilers. It is amazing and fascinating how much love and care they give to their mate. Their life-motto is love and to be loved and that's why if you decide to have a lovebird have them in pair. People can surely learn about relationships from these birds.

One major characteristic for all parrots belonging to genus ''Agapornis'' is that visual difference between sex is impossible. Both male and female have same feather and cere color as well as body structure. The only way is measuring pelvic and thorax, but even expert breeder can't be absolutely sure.

On this photo you can see variety of peach-faced lovebirds,
on the main part of the photo are
Angola peach-faced lovebird ( on the left) and albino mutation (on the right),
left part of the photo: multicolored and lution mutation, as well as one peach-faced lovebird from Angola
in the middle are natural colored peach-faced lovebirds, so called normal

cremino rosiecollis
Offcourse there are mutations of these species, as there are for almost every parrot species. Now, thanks to scientistc from this field of genetics, we have albino (white), cremino-pale yellowish-white with soft rosey forehead and crop. Mixing these two basic mutations we can get yelowish-green and white-blue peach-faced lovebirds.
